What's the Difference between Catholics and Protestants?

Works -
- Catholics believe works are necessary for salvation.

- Protestants refer to the Bible that states that salvation is by faith alone then good works should be the evidence of their salvation.  (Ephesians 2:8-10)

Catholics refers to the Bible verses in the book of James 2:14-26 to state that "Faith Without Works Is Dead."
Is this right?  Do you earn Salvation?

To prove that this is an incorrect understanding of what James wrote, Protestants use a host of Bible verses to show that Salvation is first then works.  They show that Salvation is a free gift of God, which is HIS Grace, plus our faith in Jesus:

Romans 11:6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God
Ephesians 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit
2 Timothy 1:9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,
Galatians 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

Should Christians participate in works?

Yes. This was the James' point. If you are truly Saved, show me by your works. Why?

Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
Matthew 5:16 - Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
John 14:15 - If you love me, keep my commandments.

What the Bible says about Faith... (many, many verses but here are two to absorb)

What is Faith?  Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:6 - And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
